  • Solution to lateral buckling issue in design

The main bridge is a three-span continuous steel structure with a triple arch system that has spans of 591 ft-709 ft-591 ft with a total bridge height of 210 ft and bridge width of 41 ft. It has an elegant shape and was designed as the longest tied-arch bridge in China at that time. The superstructure is comprised of two riding decks. The top deck is for eight lanes of vehicular traffic, while the bottom deck carries two tracks of heavy freight train loading. Due to the bridge height and design loading, bridge lateral buckling is the biggest concern in the bridge design process. We developed a new analytical method and successfully resolved the bridge elastic and inelastic lateral buckling issue.
